Despite some critical bashing, The Super Mario Bros. Movie had been doing great numbers at the box office, opening with a whopping $200 million in ticket sales. Now almost a month since release, it’s been revealed that the movie has now crossed a billion.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie has Officially Crossed the $1 Billion Mark

Variety reports that The Super Mario Bros. Movie has crossed $1 billion in box office numbers 26 days after the premiere. It’s said to be the fifth pandemic era movie to pass the billion mark; the previous titles being Avatar: The Way of Water, Jurassic World Dominion, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Top Gun: Maverick.

On the animated genre alone though, Super Mario Bros. still has a lot of films to compete with when it comes to the top spot. So far, the list has been dominated by Disney titles like the Frozen films and the Lion King remake sitting at the very top of the list. Other fellow Illumination projects that have grossed more than a billion include Minions and Despicable Me 3.

I’ll admit, The Super Mario Bros. Movie may not have the same level of adult-pandering as Pixar or Disney films, but it still managed to be a fun romp that is not only fun for kids, but longtime Super Mario fans as well. Not to mention the movie looks absolutely gorgeous, perfectly translating the world of Super Mario into the big screen without it looking too much like a video game.

For now, you can watch out for The Super Mario Bros. Movie now showing in theaters.
