Who would have thought that Tetris and Super Mario would be getting movies within weeks of each other’s release? Tetris is set to come out on Apple TV+ this weekend, and we have a new behind-the-scenes featurette looking into the actual story of how the game was smuggled out of Russia and into homes all over the world.

What’s interesting is, they got the actual Henk Rogers and Alexey Pajitnov to appear in the featurette to talk a little about their actual experiences. It would be great if they actually appeared in the movie in some kind of cameo.
For a game about lining up blocks and making them disappear, it’s pretty crazy how the story of it coming to the Gameboy was full of espionage and government spies. I’m sure that some of the scenes in the film were added just to ramp up the action, but the basic premise really feels like something that actually happened; especially during the height of the Cold War.
At least they didn’t go the way of the Emoji movie and assigned different personalities for each block and have a story where they try to find some kind of purpose.

Henk Rogers discovers Tetris in 1988, and then risks everything by travelling to the Soviet Union, where he joins forces with inventor Alexey Pajitnov to bring the game to the masses.
Tetris premieres on Apple TV+ on March 31.
