It’s been a while since we got an update on Netflix’s upcoming Gears of War movie, but the project has just nabbed one major role—and that’s the screenwriter.
According to a press release (via Gizmodo), it has been revealed that Dune and Passengers writer Jon Spaihts has signed on to write the script for Netflix’s Gears of War movie. Spaihts explains:
“Gears of War is one of the all-time great action games, with vivid characters, a beautifully designed world, and a combat system that drives home the lethality of war and the importance of standing by your squadmates. It wants to be cinema, and I’m thrilled to have the chance to help that happen.”
Admittedly, Spaihts filmography is far from the violent sci-fi that is the Gears of War brand, but as long as he’s passionate about the project, I think it would be worth checking out. I guess it’s also funny that he worked on Dune, since Dave Bautista, who was also in Dune, has been an online-fan favorite pick to play the lead of the Gears of War movie.
For now, it’s unclear what kind of story Netflix wants to tell with Gears of War, but they better be pitching in for the VFX demands which are probably going to be huge. While I’m not expecting Dune, I’m sure there’s a lot of interesting lore to the Gears world that they work into the series.
They should at least aim to be better than the Halo series which turned out to underperform when it was released.
Gears of War still has no release date on Netflix.
