The world of CDPR’s Cyberpunk 2077 is about to receive a major expansion—not in the game, but on Netflix. This September will see the release of Studio Trigger’s Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime, and we have a new trailer showcasing the neo-futuristic Night City.
Check this out:
The official description reads:
The series tells a standalone, 10-episode story about a street kid trying to survive in Night City — a technology and body modification-obsessed city of the future. Having everything to lose, he stays alive by becoming an edgerunner — a mercenary outlaw also known as a cyberpunk.
Though CDPR’s Cyberpunk game leans in on the more realistic aesthetic, Studio Trigger has opted to embrace their signature style for Edgerunners, with the colourful characters and Gurren Lagan aesthetic. While the studio is also known for making kid-friendly properties, Edgerunners doesn’t really hold back on the R-rated elements. If anything, the series kind of feels like Ghost in the Shell, but not as bleak.
With the vast world of Cyberpunk, there’s always great places to explore with original characters. Even then, I’m sure that the anime will have some familiar locations and characters when it comes to the game. You think there’s enough room for a cameo from Keanu Reeves’ Johnny Silverhand?
We don’t know what the plan is with Edgerunners, but I’m already excited to see what Trigger has to bring to the table with this series. It’s sure to have its own special take when it comes to Night City.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is set to release on Netflix sometime in September.
