After several Witcher properties, Netflix is set to bring in an adaptation from another CD Projekt Red IP with Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. The show is set to debut this September, and Netflix has released the official anime opening with music from Franz Ferdinand.
Watch this:
While anime usually bring in local J-bands to provide the music, Cyberpunk actually does something different by having a UK band providing the music. This isn’t Franz Ferdinand’s first anime as well; they also provided the closing music for the anime Paradise Kiss which came out back in 2005.
Just like Witcher before it, Cyberpunk has such an expansive lore that it can be an avenue for several stories based on different kinds of characters. There’s also a wealth of factions in the realm of Night City with each one being able to tell a different kind of story.
With the game known for its fantastic visuals, there’s always a lot of pressure for the adaptations to be able to match the original project aesthetically, but I think that Studio Trigger has been able to adapt the neon colors of the game while at the same time giving the series their own original look.
The series tells a standalone, 10-episode story about a street kid trying to survive in Night City — a technology and body modification-obsessed city of the future. Having everything to lose, he stays alive by becoming an edgerunner — a mercenary outlaw also known as a cyberpunk.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners comes to Netflix this September.
